Skhalta Cathedral

The Skhalta Monastery complex includes various structures: a main church, a smaller church, a wine cellar, and tombs. The monument is located in the village of Kinchauri, in the Khulo Municipality. The main church of Skhalta is a large hall-type structure, which originally had porches attached to its southern and western sides. Today, only the arched entrance of one porch remains, while the other has long since collapsed. The church bears numerous traces of repairs and restorations over the centuries.
Many researchers have attempted to determine the age of the monument, proposing various dates. However, the church is now generally accepted to date back to the 12th century. In addition to its architectural characteristics, this dating is supported by an analysis of the socio-political status of its builders — the eristavis of the Abuserisdze family — during that period. It was precisely at that time that the Abuseridzes found themselves in a position where the construction of such a church became a necessity.
Did you know that...
1. The main church of Skhalta measures 25 paces in length and 12 paces in width.
2. As a result of restoration work carried out in 1957 and 1989, the church was renovated once again, and since 1990 it has been an active place of worship.
3. A legend passed down among the people tells the story of the construction of Skhalta Church:
The master builder was said to be so wise and precise in his calculations that he had determined in advance exactly how many stones would be needed to complete the church. The stones were brought to the site by being passed hand to hand. When only one stone remained to finish the building, it turned out that the supply had run out. Realizing his miscalculation, the master could not bear the shame and took his own life.
4. Another legend tells that when hordes invaded Adjara from the east, Queen Tamar took refuge in Khikhani Fortress. From there, she would secretly travel to Skhalta Church to pray, using an underground passage. When the enemy eventually discovered the hidden path and attempted to capture her, Queen Tamar refused to surrender — instead, she drank poison to avoid falling into enemy hands.
