Gergeti Trinity
Although the exact date of the church's construction is unknown, it is believed to have been built in the 1330s. The building stone was transported from a village about two kilometers away. The first recorded mention of Gergeti Trinity Church and its adjoining monastery dates back to 1392, during the reign of King Bagrat V of Georgia, who entrusted the local community with its protection — a tradition that continued for centuries.
Did you know that…
1. According to Georgian scholar Prince Teimuraz Bagrationi, the Apostle Andrew is said to have traveled through this region and erected a cross at Gergeti. Later, Saint Nino — who preached Christianity across Georgia — also visited the area and raised a cross here.
2. During the Russian Empire, the church’s interior was painted over with oil-based paints, covering the original frescoes.
3. In 1966, the village of Gergeti was merged into the nearby town of Kazbegi, but the church retained its historic name.
4. In 2006, during conservation work, paintings from the 16th century were discovered beneath a layer of plaster in the sanctuary. These include depictions of the Virgin Mary, Christ, John the Baptist, and Saint Nino.
5. The small annex on the church’s southern wall once served as a meeting room for the Council of Elders — a group of local community leaders who gathered to make key decisions about regional life.
